2008 Susan B. Anthony Award; League of Women Voters of Schenectady County

Presented to Anne and Almy Coggeshall

Both Anne and Almy were born and raised in New York State. Anne's family moved from Syracuse to Schenectady in 1938, where Anne completed High School and then studied music at Oberlin College during World War II. Almy was born in Schenectady in 1917 and received his college education at Middlebury College in Vermont, graduating in 1940. He was hired by the General Electric Company in 1942; he retired from the company in 1977.

Anne and Almy were married in 1946, and they were blessed with two children. Thus Anne dedicated much of her life in these years to raising children, volunteering for the PTA and cooperative nursery schools.

Meanwhile, Almy had gotten involved in the Adirondack Mountain Club, where he eventually served as president. He is widely credited with establishing a "carry-in, carry-out" policy for the Adirondack Park and for promoting cross-country skiing and snowshoeing as a recreational sport in New York. His work eventually culminated in a DEC booklet, "Nordic Skiing and Snowshoe Trails in New York Forest Preserves." He and Anne also published a book, "Twenty-five Ski Tours in the Adirondacks." Eventually, Almy got involved with protection of the Schenectady aquifer and with trail development in the Plotterkill, the Indian Kill and the County Forest. He also advocated for a countywide waste disposal program. Schenectady County honored him with renaming the Plotterkill Preserve to the "Almy D. Coggeshall Plotterkill Preserve.

Anne worked closely with her husband on all environmental issues. In addition, she got involved with NARAL and promotion of reproductive rights. She has also been a docent for ECOS nature walks and at the Schenectady Historical Society, where she has served on the board. In order to nurture her musical talent, she also sang with the Octavos for many years. Both Anne and Almy continue to generously support liberal causes, such as SICM, Bethesda House, Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson at the local level and the Southern Poverty Law Center and the ACLU nationally.
